ArtCorps forms strategic partnerships with local development organizations in Central America in order to improve their capacity to educate, empower and mobilize communities. Over a period of five years, ArtCorps places Artists trained in Art for Social Action in communities served by the organizations. During one- to two-year placements, the Artists use murals, theater, stories, music, puppetry and other creative facilitation techniques to inspire and educate people to participate in improving their communities. At the same time, the Artists train partner organizations to integrate arts-based tools into their education and outreach programs.
ArtCorps leaves behind stronger and more effective local organizations operating in collaboration with active and informed communities.
Each approach to using art as a tool for social change is rooted in a shared philosophy that art establishes trust, builds confidence and develops initiative. What is unique about ArtCorps is its focus on transferring this methodology to grassroots organizations to use as a tool to mobilize communities around particular social and environmental issues. - To empower communities to build stronger, more peaceful societies by training social change organizations to use participatory arts as a strategy for outreach, education and engagement in their programs.
- To perpetuate the use of participatory art as an innovative tool for empowering and educating communities among non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and international funders.
- To build the organizational capacity within both the NGOs (trained staff) and communities (local artists) to continue to use the participatory arts for social action after the artists leave.
- To create opportunities for artists to use art to catalyze social and environmental change.
