ArtCorps Art-a-thon

ArtCorps is looking for local volunteers to help plan an "Art-a-thon," where participants will take part in our experiential learning through the arts that we practice in the field in Central America.

Whether you are a long-time supporter who wants to experience our Art for Social Action methodology, a local artist looking for a way to get involved with ArtCorps, or a local activist who wants to learn creative techniques to engage audiences, this is the event for you! We are looking for creative and resourceful volunteers to assist with planning and fundraising for this landmark event. Please contact Monika at monika.navarro@artcorp.org to sign up to help!

Our 2010 artists are an exceptional group, on paper and in action. I was already familiar with their impressive portfolios, but it was quite a thrill to watch ten new and returning ArtCorps artists embrace Art for Social Action at the January training. True to our participatory learning model, the artists practiced the creative facilitation techniques they were learning, engaged in rich discussion and collaborated across different mediums. In the words of Israel Recinos, our ACOFOP counterpart who attended the training, "ArtCorps brings honors to the name 'artist'." We are proud to have these artists representing ArtCorps in the field!

Amy Glasser
amyglasser_jantraining

Amy Glasser
is an American multi-media artist and a firm believer of art as a mode of social empowerment. She recently volunteered with the Pomona Day Laborers, teaching and creating art with immigrant children and men who work as day laborers in Southern California.

Read about her first weeks as an ArtCorps volunteer:

"First train with ArtCorps. Second, help US doctors translate and give out drugs. Then get to know the communities where I will be working.... I have been following the beat of the Guatemalan drum, which is an eclectic sound of cockadoodling of chickens in the morning, of hand clapping tortilla-making midday, and of bursts of fireworks at night ....I arrived at a training with a beautiful group of artists from different parts of the earth, all gathered in Antigua, Guatemala with similar intentions. Strangers at first, we had the ability to create a sacred space of openness, creativity... all very present with each other.... [This] is what we ideally wish to form in the communities where we will be working. And I hope we all do."

A few highlights

"I had the utmost pleasure of accompanying Artcorps on one of their journeys to Guatemala. The experience had a huge impact on my beliefs in Artcorps and their passion for communicating through art." - Lily Englelhardt

"Few organizations devote their time and resources to promote social change through the arts. ArtCorps is doing just that. As a friend of mine pointed out, "the arts don't need to be translated." It is good to see that ArtCorps is using the arts to tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our time." - Patrick Kabanda

"I was a volunteer for ArtCorps in the first years of the organization's work. The ArtCorps model is unique in its ability to levarage the power of the arts to transform struggling communities. My experience living in Guatemala for two years as an ArtCorps artist was transformative for me as an artist and activist and transformative for many of the Mayan girls that my program supported. I am currently the Executive Director of a small non-profit that promotes youth development through the arts for low-income, "at-risk" youth. I credit ArtCorps for giving me the opportunity as a young artist to apply my skills and for helping to get me where I am today." - Eryn Johnson
