Encuentro de Artistas ArtCorps en la Finca de Macadamias

ArtCorps Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

Mayan Candle Ceremony, ArtCorps Artist Isabel Carrio, Midyear Retreat

Active Listening Exercise with ArtCorps Artist Evelina Jagminaite and Program Manager Fernando Carcache, Midyear Retreat

ArtCorps Artists on Retreat at Macadamia Farm

ArtCorps Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

The ArtCorps Artists and our program manager boarded the minibus that would take us from Quetzaltenango to the community of Nueva Alianza in Retalhuleu, Guatemala for our annual retreat.

Mayan Ceremony

Despite the early start that Miguel, Evelina and Fernando had to make to join Isa and Patricia in Quetzaltenango, we were all very excited to each other again and to share our experiences. The warm air entered through the bus windows, marking the palpable difference between the climate of Quetzaltenango and that of the coast. It was the perfect spot for a retreat in a setting that was new to everyone. It would give us the opportunity to recharge our creative energy for the rest of the year, until our next gathering. And so began the process of preparation for the coming days of hard work, which would both inspire and motivate us, raising our spirits along the way.

In our group workshops, Evelina showed us how she broaches the topic of pleasure in workshops on sexual health with groups of teens from the communities served by WINGS. We enjoyed participating in Miguel’s activity, which transported us to a playful space to reflect on the importance of self-esteem. This was a small example of his greater efforts with FUNDAHMER and the youth leaders of Morazán in El Salvador. Patricia showed us an inspirational video about the life of one of the young people who had participated in her video production workshops with Cultural Survival in San Mateo, Quetzaltenango. Isabel engaged us in a session on creative inter-culturality, during which we shared our diverse cultures in the context of the Mayan cosmology, as an example of her work with EcoLogic and 48 Cantons in Totonicapán, Guatemala.

Active Listening Exercise

Fernando, our coordinator, saw to it that our work environment was suitable, secure and relaxing. His vibrant personality and clear outlines facilitated our grasp of concepts like the importance of power relations in order to understand and transform the reality in the communities where we work. After four days of enjoying Doña Floris’s delicious food and bright morning smile, we felt energized and prepared to continue with our work. We left with renewed certainty that Art for Social Action is powerful and transformative tool , and with doors wide open for us to continue exploring it.
